How much was your last cell phone bill?
$100? $200? $300 or more?
Did you know there are alternatives to the big cell phone providers (and you can still use their towers for the exact same service)? Did you know you could cut your cell phone bill in half?
Here’s how we did it.
The Contract from Hell
When we moved to Colorado four years ago, I ditched our discount cell service the same week. We didn’t have a signal at all during most of our drive through the Midwest. I was convinced that only Verizon could give me the high-quality cell service I wanted.
I knew nothing about cell phone providers. And I didn’t know I had other options.
We went to the Verizon store, bought overpriced cell phones, and signed a contract for two years of service. The phones were advertised as “free,” but let’s be honest. Nothing is free. The cost of the phones was bundled into our monthly bill.
If I knew what we were getting into, I’d have stayed with the discount service.
Our Verizon experience was two years of hell. Customer service was terrible, and we were locked in. As a person who loathes obligation, I’d made a mistake signing that contract. The only way out was a hefty disconnection fee that cost more than keeping the service.
The day our two years was up, I called to cancel. That was a new kind of hell. I had to literally cry and beg them to cancel my service.
They tried every trick in the book to get me to stay. I had to lie about going off the grid and not using a cell phone anymore just to get the promotional offers to stop. (And that’s not an exaggeration.)
Switching to Prepaid
After “negotiating” our way out of the Verizon contract, we switched to prepaid. We thought it would be a smarter mover. And it was, at least compared to our previous bill of $150 a month for two phones.
We stuck with Verizon because I was still convinced their service was superior to other carriers. We bought cheap smart phones, and set up the prepaid plan.
At the time, we got 1 GB of data with unlimited talk and text for $45 a month per phone. Our bill was around $95 for the SAME EXACT SERVICE we were getting with the contract.
That’s right. We saved about $55 a month just by switching from contract service to prepaid. We had to purchase our own phones, but it still saved us money over time. And the best part – we weren’t locked into a contract that required us to sell our first-born child to escape.
It took us another year to find even better options.
How I Cut My Cell Phone Bill in Half
This is my real secret.
I switched to Republic Wireless – a cell phone service provider that allows you to call and text over WiFi and defaults to Sprint or T-Mobile networks when no WiFi is available.
And it literally cut my cell phone bill in half.
We now pay $46 a month for the SAME EXACT SERVICE that we had with Verizon contract ($150) and prepaid ($95). That’s two phones with 1 GB of data each and unlimited talk and text. (See the picture of my bill below.)
Here’s how you can do it too.
Switch to Republic Wireless
I’ve researched other cell phone plans, but Republic Wireless always wins. Using WiFi when it’s available keeps the price low for everyone. And it is dirt cheap.
Here are the features we like best:
- Coverage everywhere – We traveled the same path through the Midwest and never lost service once (unlike our other “discount” service a few years earlier).
- Automatic WiFi – The phones automatically use WiFi for calls, text, and data when possible and when cell service can’t reach.
- Clear Choice Plans – Unlimited talk and text for $15 a month. Data is $5/GB. Add or remove data any time right from your phone.
- Monitor Data Usage – The Republic Wireless app shows your usage in real time and updates you when you’re getting close to your data limit.
- 14 Day Free Trial – Try it for 14 days free to see if it’s right for you. We did, and we were hooked. The service is amazing, but you can try it for yourself at no cost.
Cut Your Cell Phone Bill in Half
We’ve saved about $600 on our cell phone bill since switching to Republic Wireless from prepaid. Compared to our contract plan, we’re saving about $1,200 a year.
I have never had to contact Republic’s customer service, because I have never had an issue. Twice I have used all my data for the month, and twice they’ve automatically added a free GB. I didn’t even ask. They just gave it to me.
I don’t have enough good things to say about this company. If you make the switch, you’ll save a ton of money and I guarantee you’ll be happier with their service than the big cell companies. No more frustrating calls to call centers in India, and more free time to enjoy your cell service.
